GUIDELINES FOR RAISING
RESPONSIBLE AND
RESPECTFUL
ADOLESCENTS
"Help!!"--Parent of a teenager
1
Introduction
This book is a sequel to my first book, How To Raise Responsible Children, which was a general approach to raising children from ages two to eighteen. As I continued to work with families with teenage children, I realized that parents of adolescents have more specific issues and questions than were addressed in my first book. I wrote Adult at 18: Guidelines for Raising Responsible and Respectful Adolescents to give parents in-depth, detailed answers to their questions about raising their adolescent children.
Adult at 18 suggests very specific things that you could say in both positive interactions and in problem situations with your adolescent children. Although there is no guarantee of a successful outcome using these approaches, they have proved effective and helpful to parents of adolescents who have been in therapy with me in the past.
I also include several open letters to teenagers. There are two copies of each letter so that you can keep one in the book and tear the other one out to give to your children. Feel free to modify individual letters so that they apply to your particular situation.
The book is divided into the following three parts: 1) general principles of child management and ideas for preparing children to be adults when they turn eighteen; 2) specific techniques for talking to and disciplining adolescents; 3) topic by topic discussion of a typical day living with teenagers and gives guidelines for discipline.
Good luck raising your adults-in-training!
